10 Things To Do In Mount Austin After Dark
Mount Austin was drawn up as a housing estate. Rows of shop lots, a golf course, a mall on the edge of it. Nobody planned it as a destination, and yet a Singaporean crossing at Woodlands can be soaking in a mineral bath, racing a go-kart, or meeting a fennec fox inside forty minutes of clearing immigration.
What makes the neighbourhood unusual is its clock. A go-kart track here takes bookings until 2am. A hotpot shop serves clams until 3am. The estate keeps going long after most of Johor Bahru has shut. Here are ten things worth building an evening around!
1. Walk Into A Hobbit Village At Hobbit Music House
Mount Austin's newest opening is also one of the most whimsical. Hobbit Music House — also signposted as Hobbit Austin — sits on Jalan Mutiara Emas 8 near the Austin Heights golf course and has been touted as Malaysia's first hobbit-themed forest music market.
Here, visitors will find many prime photo spots such as round-doored cottages, forest treehouses, an arched bridge, a waterfall backdrop, a pet playground, and a children's play area, wrapped around night market stalls, live music, and an evening light show. Listings put opening hours at 10am to midnight. Daylight is better for getting photos at the cottages, but the light show is the reason to stay past eight.
2. Ride An ATV Through A Swamp At Midnight
ATV Park Johor sits about thirteen minutes by taxi from the estate, on Jalan Ekoflora 6/6, and runs trails that cut through rubber plantations, old estate roads and swamp. ATV rental starts at around RM120.
The detail worth planning around is the weekend timetable. Weekdays close at 7pm with the last ride at 6pm, but Saturday and Sunday sessions run as late as 11.30pm, which turns a muddy afternoon activity into a night adventure. Rubber boots are provided, and it would be a good idea to wear clothes that can be written off afterwards!
3. Try The Labour Pain Simulator At BangHistory
BangHistory on Persiaran Austin Heights 8/6 built its reputation on a machine that delivers ten escalating levels of simulated labour contractions for about RM25. The same venue also runs a rage room at roughly RM40 for thirty minutes and a set of horror-themed escape rooms. It opens early afternoon and runs to 11pm on weekdays, and 12am on weekends.
4. Eat Under String Lights At Johor Jaya Food Street
A short ride away from Mount Austin, Jalan Dedap turns into a food street most evenings. Carts are pushed into position before 5pm, stallholders set out their own tables and chairs, and once it is dark the lights come on. There are easily more than forty stalls, running from grilled whole fish with sambal, to oyster omelette, satay, lok lok and Thai plates.
Seating is a free-for-all, so send someone ahead to claim a table. The food street is closed on Tuesdays, where on that same evening the weekly pasar malam takes over. Among them is a fried prawn cracker stall going over fifteen years that sells out before 9pm!
5. Race Until 2am at GT Karting
For some go kart fun, GT Karting opens at 4pm and takes drivers until 2am. It is one of the few places in Johor Bahru where a group can leave supper at midnight and still get a race in. Prices start from 40RM for a standard kart and 55RM for a twin kart on weekdays.
6. Make A Rug You Can Bring Home
Tufting studios have multiplied across the estate, with Tutu Studio among the established names. A rug session runs about three hours from sketch to trimmed pile, and prices start from 139RM. Expect the tufting gun to be heavier than it looks; beginners usually feel it in the forearms by the second hour. The same operators also run pottery wheel sessions of about two hours, if you prefer something shorter. Both activities require booking, with morning, afternoon, and evening slots available.
7. Soak In An Onsen
38°C Onsen occupies a unit at Akademik Suite on Jalan Austin Heights Utama and visitors can expect a Japanese-style sequence: change into a kimono, foot bath first, then the mineral soak. The shop is open at 10.30am and close at 9pm, making it great if you're looking for a pre-dinner soak. Private rooms are also available for couples, and prices range from 328RM to 398RM depending on the package chosen.
8. Get a Massage at Mu Spa & Reflexology
No trip to JB is complete without a massage! Located at 30 and 32 Jalan Austin Heights 8/2 Mu Spa & Reflexology opens at 4pm and takes clients until 2am. You can get anything from head, shoulder, body to foot massages, with prices starting from 83RM.
9. KTV Hotpot at The Rhythm
The Rhythm on Jalan Austin Heights 8/8 pairs private karaoke rooms with hotpot service at the table, and structures its pricing around the food: hit the minimum spend and the first three hours of room time come free! Broths run from tomato to tom yum, mala and herbal. It stays open until midnight on weeknights and 2am on Fridays and Saturdays — make sure to make a booking to avoid disappointment!
10. Late-Night Supper at Jalan Mutiara Emas
The late-night eating clusters along Jalan Mutiara Emas and the Austin Heights roads are the place to be for night owls. Broloklok and its skewers are available from 7pm to 2am, with tiger prawns, otah, and century egg among the options. Hei Huang BBQ Grill Fish nearby also runs to 2am for those craving for sambal stingray and lala. Looking for something that runs even later? Dai Tao Lala Pot serves its clam hotpot until 3am!

Families should anchor the day at Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park and finish at Hobbit Music House for the light show. Couples get more out of the onsen followed by the lok lok strip. Groups of friends will find the money goes furthest at BangHistory and GT Karting, both of which are funnier with an audience.
